Piotr Anderszewski′s first recording was made in 1996 for the Polish record label Accord. Anderszewski chose Beethoven′s Op.110 sonata, a work that had been in his repertoire since 1987, and which he knew intimately, and the sixth of Bach′s English Suites even though, as he now admits, ′Bach was at that time not really my thing′ - a fact not remotely evident in this searching and sensitive performance. The choice of Webern′s Op.27 Variations in part exorcises the trauma of the 1990 Leeds Piano Competition in which Anderszewski famously withdrew, disappointed with his performance of this short work. This remarkable debut disc won the Polish Critics′ Prize for 1996.
