Herbert von Karajan was without doubt one of the most fascinating personalities in twentieth century musical life. His work exerted a decisive influence on all realms of classical music after the end of the second world war, yet he was far from being an uncontroversial figure in his roles as conductor, director and music festival manager.

This film documentary by Gernot Friedel, in association with the Herbert von Karajan Centre, follows the life and work of the great conductor, revealing both his charisma - the ′Karajan phenomenon′ - and also the more controversial sides of his personality and musical approach. Extracts from opera and concert works by Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Bach, Puccini, Johann Strauss (the younger), Mahler, Verdi, Richard Strauss and Schönberg testify to the wide-ranging repertoire which Herbert von Karajan developed during his life as a conductor.
