Herman van Veen en Edith Leerkes staan met Songs in the distance stil bij Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger, een jonge Joodse dichteres, die in 1942, toen ze achttien was, aan de ontberingen in het naziwerkkamp Michailowska (Oekraïne) overleed. Ze liet 57 gedichten na; op een aantal ervan maakten Herman van Veen en Edith Leerkes muziek.
