"In het cd-boekje kan je lezen: "Zingen is in de Baltische Staten niet alleen een kwestie van muziek maken, maar het brengt vooral sociale en rituele implicaties teweeg".
Hoofdmoot van deze muziek is een mis geschreven voor de Dom van Riga, de Missa Rigensis. De auteur - Ugis Praulins (°1957) - was vroeger zelf lid van dit koor. Deze mis verenigt alle mogelijke zangtechnieken: declamatie, lyriek, fluister- en spreekkoor, sotto voce, melismen, pointillisme, inspiratie uit het gregoriaans en de 16e eeuwse polyfonie, faux bourdon, chromatiek, clusters, gesyncopeerde ritmiek, ... Het resultaat is dus een combinatie van pure eenvoud (begin Sanctus!) en complexiteit (Crucifixus); nogal theatraal dus, maar
recht naar het hart van elke luisteraar; het moet heerlijk zijn deze muziek (in al haar variëteit) te kunnen zingen!
Naast de mis vind je nog enkele motetten: een cyclus van drie Letse werken van Maija Einfelde en vier Latijnse werken van Urmas Sisask, Vytautas Miskinis en Praulins zelf.
Het koor van Cambridge (een 30-tal zangers) is fantastisch in zijn interpretatie; het enthousiasme straalt eraf. Dat, in combinatie met zeer goed stemmenmateriaal, levert een knappe opname af! (Renate Weytjens - Klara)
